'Walking Dead' will tone down violence

The Walking Dead, one of the most popular shows on television, has always reveled in violence and gore. Apparently, the season 7 premiere took it too far and the producers have responded to criticism announcing that they will tone down the violence in future episodes. The episode that sparked this controversy showed villain Negan gruesomely murder two fan favorite characters, Glenn and Abraham, with a baseball bat covered in barbed wire.

The Parents Television Council were among the most prominent of critics towards the show's violence.

“Last night’s season premiere of The Walking Dead was one of the most graphically violent shows we’ve ever seen on television, comparable to the most violent of programs found on premium cable networks,” council president Tim Winter said.

The council and other viewers concerns were heard loud and clear as the show's executives have decided to take action. Executive producer Gale Anne Hurd spoke at a conference on Wednesday in which she addressed the backlash.

“We were able to look at the feedback on the level of violence,” said Hurd, adding, “We did tone it down for episodes we were still filming for later on in the season. This is not a show that is torture porn.”

The producers might find themselves walking a fine line between toning it down and staying true to the show. Fans of the comics might be upset at the changes, scenes from the premiere were straight from the creator Roger Kirkman's comic book. Plus, some viewers have already voiced displeasure with the show saying it's too boring.

Fans will be able to make their own judgement of the show's supposed changes. The Walking Dead will return on Sunday, Feb. 12 on AMC.
