...and the Oscar goes to La La Land ... uh, I mean Moonlight.
While producers of this latest awards show were nervous about political controversy over the Trump administration or the #OscarsSoWhite movement, they should have instead focused on simply making sure the correct envelopes were in the hands of the right presenters.
In a series of events made for television, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, legends in their own rights, mistakenly announced La La Land as the winner of the coveted Best Picture award. La La Land cast and producers made their way to the stage. Admidst the acceptance speeches, confusion began to breakout on stage, while people in headsets conferred with presenters and cast.
The audience was in the dark until Fred Berger, one of the producers ended his speech with, “We lost, by the way — but, you know.” Next Jordan Horowitz stepped to the mic and to a stunned crowd said, “Guys, guys, I’m sorry. No. There’s a mistake. Moonlight, you guys won best picture.”
PriceWaterhouseCooper, the accounting firm responsible for counting the ballots, has since issued a "sincere apology," noting that they are investigating how it could have happened.
