Guess what, guys? There was a reason for Nicole Kidman's seal clapping at the Oscars

Actress Nicole Kidman has finally come clean about her odd looking seal claps at the 89th annual Academy Awards on Feb. 26.

In case you need a refresher, most normal people clap like this:

But at the Oscars, Nicole Kidman decided to clap, like this:

Of course, the Twitterverse had a field day.

Now the Aussie actress is providing an explanation for her admittedly strange clapping. Apparently it was to protect the diamond rings she wore to the ceremony.

Kidman appeared on Australian radio show KIIS FM and explained that she was trying to applaud without damaging  the 119 carats of  Harry Winston rings she wore for the occasion, including a large cluster diamond ring.

"I was like, ‘Gosh, I want to clap, I don’t want to not be clapping,’ which would be worse, right? ‘Why isn’t Nicole clapping," she said according to The Guardian.

Although she acknowledged how odd her claps were, Kidman said that they probably shouldn't have gained so much attention saying “It’s like, is there not more important things to be focused on than the seal clap?”
