Trailer Park: ‘Smurfs’ return to theaters

Actress Michelle Rodriguez and director Werner Herzog each have two films entering theaters this weekend. Rodriguez, among many other celebrities, lends her voice to the latest Smurf film.

Smurfette, Brainy, Clumsy and Hefty go on a mission to find out if the legend and that there’s another town of Smurfs out there is true in Smurfs: The Lost Village. When they come in contact with the secret village, they must warn their newfound friends of the evil Gargamel. The PG animated adventure features the voices of Demi Lovato, Rainn Wilson, Joe Manganiello, Jack McBrayer, Mandy Patinkin, Michelle Rodriguez, Ellie Kemper, Ariel Winter, Julia Roberts, Gordon Ramsay, Gabriel Iglesias, Tituss Burgess, Jeff Dunham and Jake Johnson. It plays for one hour and thirty minutes.

Following his sister’s death, a man is entrusted to look after his 7-year-old niece with extraordinary mathematical abilities in Gifted. He is determined to give her a normal childhood, but when his mother finds out about her granddaughter’s genius, she tries to take her away from him to further the young girl’s academic skills. Chris Evans, McKenna Grace, Lindsay Duncan, Jenny Slate and Octavia Spencer star in the PG-13 drama. The film plays for one hour and forty-one minutes.

Three old friends, strapped for cash, contemplate robbing a bank in Going in Style. They set their sights on the financial institution that took away their pension fund. The PG-13 comedy stars Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Alan Arkin, Ann-Margret, Joey King, Matt Dillon and Christopher Lloyd. The Zach Braff directed film plays for one hour and thirty-six minutes.

While the men are out serving in World War II, a British woman is given the opportunity to be a screenwriter for a propaganda film in Their Finest. With death and destruction surrounding them, the film crew forms a bond as they are tasked to promote hope during tough times. The comedic drama runs for one hour and fifty-seven minutes. It’s rated R for language and sex.

Queen of the Desert is the true story of Gertrude Bell, an early 20th century British woman who had a major role in the development of Iran after World War I. The two hour and eighteen minute drama shows her dangerous journey through the Middle East. Nicole Kidman, James Franco and Robert Pattinson star in the Werner Herzog directed film. The PG-13 biopic is available in limited theaters.

A doctor seeks revenge on the man who killed her brother in The Assignment. While under the knife, she turns him into a woman. Now, he’s out to seek retribution. Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Tony Shalhoub and Anthony LaPaglia star in the limited released suspense film. It’s rated R for nudity, violence, sex, language and drugs.

After being fired from her job and booted from her apartment, a down-on-her-luck woman returns to her hometown in Colossal. She soon discovers that she has unknowingly taken the identity of a monster and that her actions have a major impact on the world. The limited released comedic adventure stars Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis. The one hour and fifty minute film is rated R for language.

A man, on the verge of becoming a grandfather, finds out that his wife and daughter died in a plane accident in Aftermath. Distraught by the news, he feels that the best way to cope with the tragedy is to personally seek out an apology from the air traffic controller responsible for the accident. Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in the limited released dramatic thriller based on real events. The one hour and thirty-two minute film is rated R for violence.

A scientist is captured and left with two blind boys in the salt flats of Bolivia in Salt and Fire. The unrated thriller is directed by Werner Herzog stars Michael Shannon, Gael García Bernal and Veronica Ferres. It’s playing in limited theaters for one hour and thirty-eight minutes.

A skeptical journalist sets out to find the truth behind Jesus’ crucifixion in The Case for Christ. He goes in search of historical evidence to prove whether or not the event that is the foundation of Christianity actually did take place. The PG drama is based on real events and Lee Strobel’s book. It runs for one hour and fifty-two minutes.

Michelle Rodriguez also has another film entering theaters next week, the newest installment in the The Fast and Furious series titled The Fate of the Furious. An animated monkey tale, Spark: A Space Tail is also being released on April 14.
