'American Idol' is coming back on ABC

This is the return of American Idol. That’s right Idol is coming back, but this time it will be on ABC.

Idol was cancelled last spring by Fox after 15 seasons. According to USA Today, ABC, which confirmed the news on Tuesday, provided no details about the judges, host, when the show will return, or the duration of the series. There is speculation that a shortened season will begin next spring. The show’s previous seasons lasted about 20 weeks.

ABC wasn’t the only network trying to bring the signing competition back. NBC and Fox were also trying to bring back the show.

"American Idol is a pop-culture staple that left the air too soon," Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, said in a statement. "ABC is the right home to reignite the fan base. We are thrilled viewers will once again share in these inspiring stories of people realizing their dreams."

"American Idol on ABC...that has a nice ring to it," Ben Sherwood, co-chairman of Disney Media Networks and president of Disney/ABC said. "Idol is an entertainment icon, and now it will air where it belongs, in ABC's lineup of addictive fan favorites alongside Dancing with the Stars and The Bachelor. America, get ready for the return of a bigger, bolder and better-than-ever Idol."

The question now is will Ryan Seacrest return as host? Seacrest recently became the new co-host of Live with Kelly. He talked about the Idol rumors on Monday’s Live.

“I had said at the end of the series, ‘Goodbye for now,’ hoping somewhere it would come back,” he said. “I had no idea it was being talked about to come here until late last week I heard a rumor in the news and made a phone call, and they said, ‘Yeah, it may actually end up here.’ And I said, ‘Well, that’s kind of good to know since I work here,’ ”. “So what I do know is, apparently it’s unofficial but very close to being said it will be here. I don’t know if I can host it…”


It will be interesting to see if Seacrest returns as host or if Idol will have a new host. Are you excited about American Idol coming back?
