Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 remained at the top spot of the weekend box office and only saw a 57 percent drop during its second weekend. The film brought in $63 million and is closing in on $250 million domestically.
Box Office Mojo reports that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is about $87 million away from reaching the original’s domestic gross of $333 million back in 2014. The film also passed $630 million at the worldwide box office.
Snatched came in second place with $17.5 million. The comedy starring Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer could potentially see an increase in audience over the next few weeks but I think it will be tough for the film to hit $50 million domestically.
King: Arthur: Legend of the Sword becomes the first major flop of the summer blockbuster season. The film came in third place with $14.7 million, which is very short of projections and not good considering this film was rumored to be the start of a franchise.
The Fate of the Furious finished in fourth place with $5.3 million and has reached $215 million domestically after 31 days. The Boss Baby rounds out the top five with $4.6 million and has passed $160 million domestically.
Beauty and the Beast came in sixth place with $3.9 million and is approaching $500 million domestically.
How to Be a Latin Lover ($3.8 million), Lowriders ($2.4 million), The Circle ($1.7 million) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion ($1.6 million) round out the top 10.
I’m predicting that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be at the top spot again next weekend even though it will face some stiff competition from Alien: Covenant, the latest installment in the Alien franchise. It should be a close race for the top spot next weekend.
