Remember the 1994 film Street Fighter starring Jean-Claude Van Damme? No? Good, let's all forget about it.
A new Street Fighter TV series is in the works from the team that brought the multi-platform series, Assassin's Fist, to fans in 2014.
Street Fighter is a popular video game series developed by Capcom first released in 1987. It is considered one of the first one-on-one fighting games that inspired games like Super Smash Bros and Mortal Kombat. The game has five sequels and various spin-offs and is currently the fifth highest grossing video game franchise of all time.
While being a widely successful video game series, Street Fighter has been less than generous to the big screen. The 1994 film directed by Steven E. de Souza was hated by fans and critics alike. The only generous reception to a live action series of Street Fighter was the series Assassin's Fist, which was released on YouTube before hitting TV, On Demand and DVD/Blu-ray.
The series was so successful that distribution company Entertainment One has tapped the creators of the series to make an episodic drama based on the best selling video game franchise.
According to Metro, the series will take the game back to its roots of Street Fighter II and Capcom is fully supporting the new series.
Unfortunately, there is no evidence of any good video game adaptation to the live action format. The latest attempt to bring a video game to the big screen, Tomb Raider, came out in theaters last week starring Alicia Vikander. The film adaptation was met with lukewarm reception by fans and critics. However, it's a hit at the international box office, garnering over 274 million dollars worldwide.
Entertainment One President, Mark Gordon, has full confidence in the project and will be personally overseeing the series.
