Love it or hate it: Taylor Swift's cover of Earth, Wind & Fire’s 'September'

Taylor Swift, Ready For It

Was this the best way for Taylor Swift to return to her pop classic roots?

After releasing her album Reputation, which was a new style for Taylor Swift, responses ranged from those who loved the new album and those who are not fans of this new music at all.

“September” is not the type of tune that you would expect to hear from Swift, especially not with her pop-country roots, but Swift released it on Spotify anyway. This is a classic rock song, and is so out of Swift’s wheelhouse; maybe she should not have picked a song that is iconic to many.

DO WE LIKE IT? (I don't!)

Here at The Celebrity Cafe, we are split on if we enjoy this cover from Swift. Some of us don't think it's all that terrible, and some of us really don't like it at all.

Managing editor Angela Corry says "I lean more towards hate it, but I don't like her new stuff at all either." Writer Andrew Garcia says "That Taylor Swift cover definitely went the less interesting route. Imagine if she went all out and tried to do it more like the original? Would've been way cooler." Luke Ryan another writer says, "I thought the Taylor Swift cover was well produced but the song was country and covering that song by Earth, Wind and Fire shouldn't have been done in country. The only way I could imagine it working is something with a banjo." I, Stephanie Lottes feel that "I don't hate it, but that is not the style that song should be sung in."

Fans and journalists alike were not happy with this rendition of the song, and they did not shy away from saying how they really felt about her cover.

Monique Judge, a writer for The Root, says in her column, “There are certain songs you don’t mess with, especially if you don’t have the range, and we all know Taylor Swift has all the range of a dial tone.”

On the other side, Kelsi Gibson, a writer for PopSugar offered a defense in favor of the tune. “While the stripped-down version is a complete 180 from the soul classic, it’s also strangely reminiscent of Swift’s older country material.”

In this age of social media, it is no surprise that people were not shy about tweeting their dislike.
