'Love, Simon' director talks deleted scenes and teases sequel

Greg Berlanti wants to do a sequel.

Love, Simon hit the theaters last month and has become an instant smash.

The coming-of-age movie tells the story of one of the hardest obstacles in a young person's life: coming out.

Greg Berlanti, an openly gay man himself, manages to create a perfect balance of the awkwardness and depth that is entailed when coming out, all captured in a fun romantic comedy.

The writer and producer of projects like Riverdale and Supergirl has brought critical acclaim to a genre that traditionally does not receive much critical attention. Love, Simon is currently scoring 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and has had success in the box offices.

In an interview with Gay Star Newsthe director seemed to be in favor of the idea of a sequel.

“God willing that the movie is successful enough that people actually ask for something like that,” he said.

“I loved working with these people on this film so much. I would just like to spend more time with them, that would be good!”

Despite the success of the film, there has been some mild criticism for the film from the LGBTQA+ community. Simon never downloads Grindr or goes to a gay bar in the film (though it should be acknowledged that Simon is only 16 and can't legally partake in these actives until he is 18.)

Berlanti said there was a gay bar scene from the book Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agendawhich is what the movie is based on. Unfortunately, the scene didn't make the cut for the movie.

“It just played as it wasn’t his character,” Berlanti explained “The people in it were great, the moments were great -- but it just slowed down the narrative. And it felt like we were jumping the gun about what his experience was.”

What do you think about the idea of a Love, Simon sequel?
