DC Universe is now a streaming platform, new titles revealed

Because everyone else is doing it, so why not DC?

Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, a still-untitled Disney platform that’ll make its debut in 2019 and now: DC Universe.

That's the title DC landed on for their new streaming service, which is looking to launch sometime around 2019.

What’s even more exciting is that they’ve announced some of the shows that will be coming to the DC Universe, also revealing logos along with them.

Most notably is the announcement of a live-action Swamp Thing, based on the characters created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. The show already has horror master James Wan attached as an executive producer, with Mark Verheiden (Battlestar Galactica, Ash vs. Evil Dead) and Gary Dauberman (It, Annabelle: Creation) attached to write.

Swamp Thing (and if you can’t tell, this is the one I’m the most excited for) tells the story of Abby Arcane — a CDC researcher who is investigating a deadly virus that originates in a swamp. Everything is thrown for a loop when a former flame, Alec Holland, is transformed into a plantlike creature and starts causing a reign of terror in Houma, Louisiana.

Wes Craven created a Swamp Thing film in 1982, with Jim Wynorski directing a sequel in 1989. Swamp Thing was also introduced in a variety of TV formats in the past.

Other shows that DC announced include Metropolis (which will follow Lois Lane and Lex Luthor before Clark Kent begins working at the Daily Planet), Titans (a live-action take on Teen Titans), Harley Quinn (an animated series for adult audiences) and Young Justice: Outsiders (another animated series that has been running on Cartoon Network for three seasons already).

Harley Quinn, Young Justice: Outsiders and Titans are the properties that are expected to initially be released with the DC Universe launches, with Swamp Thing and Metropolis coming at a later date.

No word yet if DC’s CW shows — such as Arrow, Flash, Black Lightning, etc. — will find their way to the DC Universe, but it seems like a safe bet to assume they would.

I don’t know about you, but I’m excited. I know that everyone is making their own streaming service and eventually it’s going to get so competitive that we won’t be able to afford it (until Disney just buys them all, which will create a new wave of problems on itself), but I’m going to enjoy it while it lasts. A Swamp Thing series sounds right up my ally, and who knows what else the DC Universe could bring to the table at a later date?
