Incredibles 2 was one of the most anticipated sequels of the year and it delivered another hit for Pixar and Disney.
The sequel delivered a massive opening weekend of $180 million, which shattered the previous record for an animated film. The previous record was held by 2016’s Finding Dory which had an opening weekend of $135 million. Incredibles 2 delivered the eighth largest opening of all-time, just beating out Captain America: Civil War’s opening of $179.1 million.
The potential for this film is very high as some projections have it potentially grossing over $500 million domestically which would make it the highest grossing animated film of all-time. The film also brought in over $50 million internationally for a worldwide opening weekend of over $230 million.
Ocean’s 8 dropped to second place after a 53 percent drop during its second weekend. The film brought in $19.5 million and is sitting just under $80 million domestically. The film also collected another $19.3 from the international market for a worldwide gross of $116 million.
The R-rated buddy comedy Tag opened in third place with $14.6 million. The comedy opened right around expectations and I would expect this film to finish around the $40-$45 million range domestically.
Solo: A Star Wars Story dropped two spots to fourth place with $9.1 million and is slowly climbing towards $200 million domestically. The worldwide gross for this film currently stands around $339.5 million and for most films this would be a success, but since it’s a Star Wars film this is seen as a disappointment.
Deadpool 2 rounds out the top five with $8.8 million and is approaching $300 million domestically. The film has been a major success as its worldwide gross is approaching $700 million domestically.
Hereditary dropped two spots to sixth place after taking a 48 percent during its second weekend. The film brought in $7 million and is sitting just under $30 million domestically after two weeks.
Superfly ($6.3 million), Avengers: Infinity War ($5.3 million), Adrift ($2.1 million) and Book Club ($1.9 million) round out the rest of the top ten. A Wrinkle in Time finally passed $100 million at the domestic box office after 15 weeks of release.
Incredibles 2 had an incredible opening weekend but it will probably be dethroned next weekend as the highly anticipated sequel Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom opens in over 4,000 theaters. Jurassic World is one of the highest grossing films of all-time and I’m curious to see how the sequel will perform.
