‘Oceans 8’ dethrones ‘Solo’ at the weekend box office

Oceans 8 knocked Solo: A Star Wars Story from the top spot at the weekend box office, ending Solo’s two-week reign as box office champion.

The latest film in the Oceans franchise delivered the largest opening for the franchise. The film brought in $41.5 million which is the only film in the franchise with an opening of over $40 million. This is a good start for the film which will face some tough competition over the next few weeks. Every film in this franchise has crossed $100 million domestically and I think this film has a solid chance to achieve this.

Solo: A Star Wars Story dropped to second place with $15.2 million. The film is sitting right around $176 million domestically after three weeks of release. The film is also losing steam internationally and is standing with a worldwide gross of $312.2 million.

Deadpool 2 dropped down one spot to third place with $13.7 million and is closing in on $280 million domestically. The film will definitely cross $300 million domestically but I’m not sure it will pass the original film’s domestic gross of $363 million.

The new horror film Hereditary opened in fourth place with $13 million. This is the largest opening for an A24 film ever and has been labeled by some critics as one of the scariest movies to be released within the past few years. It was also the widest release ever for A24 and has already surpassed its $10 million budget.

Avengers: Infinity War rounds out the top five with $6.8 million. The film’s domestic gross stands at $654.7 million. The film is close to becoming only the fourth film in history to top $2 billion at the worldwide box office.

The other new release of the week Hotel Artemis had a rather disappointing opening. The action thriller starring Jodie Foster brought in only $3.2 million and I would not be surprised if this is the only week this film appears in the top ten.

Adrift and Upgrade both took significant drops during their second weekends. Adrift dropped 56 percent and brought in $5.1 million. Upgrade dropped 52 percent and brought in $2.2 million.

Book Club ($4.2 million) and Life of the Party ($2.1 million) round out the rest of the top ten. Outside of the top ten, A Quiet Place crossed $185 million domestically. Action Point took a major drop during its second weekend falling to fourteenth place.

Oceans 8 might only spend one week as box office champion as it faces some tough competition next week from three wide releases including the highly anticipated computer-animated film Incredibles 2.
