A Batwoman series for The CW is currently in the works and is scheduled tentatively to premiere in 2019.

The series in development is planned to follow the second incarnation of Batwoman, Kate Kane, who is, according to TVLine, “an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter.” This will be the first superhero series led by an openly gay woman. TVLine has also found fresh intel on the casting search, which is reportedly seeking an out lesbian actor to fill the role. What’s more is that the script will be penned by Caroline Dries of The Vampire Diaries, who is also a lesbian.

Batwoman was previously announced to be introduced to the Arrowverse with The CW’s next four-way crossover event, which would include The Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

The DC television universe sports a pretty hefty number of LGBT heroes, but Batwoman will be the first to helm her own series. In fact, Alex Danvers of Supergirl was briefly engaged to Detective Maggie Sawyer, a significant love interest of Kane’s in the comics.

For now, Batwoman is scheduled for a 2019 premiere.
