'Cloak & Dagger' episode 6 recap: 'Funhouse Mirrors'

Cloak & Dagger

On episode six of Cloak & Dagger, Tandy gets to know Mina, while Tyrone tries to get more information on Connors.

Previously on Cloak & Dagger, Tandy worked on seeing the hopes of Roxxon employees. Tyrone lost an important basketball game and officially started dating Evita.

“Funhouse Mirrors” opens on Evita talking to her Auntie Chantelle. Evita helps her get ready for a ritual to look into the past. Chantelle talks about the city’s past, while Evita asks about Tyrone. Chantelle looks at her tarot cards and says they need to look at the past to understand past stories. She thinks the next major story for the city will involve Tyrone in some way.

Meanwhile, in another part of New Orleans, Tyrone watches Duane. He enters the business and sees Duane talking to one of his dealers, Kev. Tyrone asks Duane for a job, but Duane says Tyrone doesn’t belong in his business. He encourages him to go to college and find a respectable job. Tyrone leaves, following Duane’s drug dealers. Kev notices Tyrone following him and threatens him with a gun.

Tandy poses as an intern named Liz and claims she’s Mina Hess’s new intern. Mina says she didn’t ask for an intern and dismisses Tandy. She changes her mind when she sees how disappointed Tandy is and tells her to get some appropriate gear for her new position.

Fuchs warns O’Reilly that other officers are paying attention to the people she’s bringing in for questioning. He says she should be careful if she’s going after Connors. Later, Connors comes to O’Reilly’s desk and looks at her work. She reveals some of what she’s found out and he offers to go with her to the area she believes the supplier works.

Tandy arrives at the church to find Tyrone waiting. They talk about Tyrone’s trouble controlling his powers. He tells her about getting a gun pulled on him and she suggests finding out Kev’s fear. She thinks Tyrone should get Kev to quit so he can go undercover in Duane’s group. She gets dressed for her first day in the swamps with Mina.

Tandy meets with Mina and the two chat about Mina’s environmental work. Tandy notices she has a model of the rig that exploded. The two women wade through the water and talk about the disappearing bees. Mina tests Tandy’s knowledge and seems to open up more when she proves she’s read Mina’s work.

Chantelle and Evita talk about important people in New Orleans’ past. Chantelle notes the change always comes from a pair of people. She has a feeling about Tyrone but doesn’t know about the other person. Later, they talk about the divine pairing saving the city. Chantelle says this time is just like the past because one part of the pairing will die while the other survives.

As the O’Reilly and Connors drive around, she says she’s working the case because she wants to keep drugs away from kids. They talk about how to take down drug dealers, then Connors notices a group of young men and tells her to stop. He runs after them and O’Reilly looks for the bag one of the guys dropped. She doesn’t find it because Tyrone was watching the guys and took the bag. Connors hits Kev and tells him to tell Duane they need to meet and he needs to stay low. He hits him again and O’Reilly shows up. She doesn’t have the bag and they let Kev go.

Mina starts telling Tandy about her valve. She asks if Tandy signed the NDA then reveals they aren’t drilling for oil. She says what they’re drilling for stronger than oil and that’s part of why the old rig blew up. Mina explains how her valve’s work to make sure an explosion won’t happen and keep Roxxon in check. Tandy mentions reading an article that blamed Nathan Bowen (her father) to get Mina’s reaction. Mina says her father Ivan always said Nathan didn’t make mistakes.

As Mina and Tandy talk, a man named Stan shows up. Stan tells Mina something is malfunctioning. She goes to check the equipment, unable to figure out what’s wrong. Tandy points to the blueprint showing the equipment should be 10 meters away, but Stan’s crew put it in the wrong spot. Mina calls Stan out on cutting corners. She says she will fix it herself the next day. As Tandy walks away, she stabs one of Stan’s tires.

Kev catches up to Tyrone and tries to get him to return the bag. Tyrone touches him and brings his fears to the surface. Tyrone goes to Duane and hands over the bag. He explains he saw Kev drop it and wants in on the business. Duane decides to bring Tyrone along on a run.

Mina rants about Stan as she and Tandy walk. She asks how Tandy knows how to read a blueprint, and she says it was due to a science guy who came to her school. Tandy tries to get Mina to open up about her father, but Mina ends up saying she’s more like Nathan than Ivan. A bee lands on Tandy and Mina gently blows it away. Tandy pulls away her hand, deciding not to touch Mina yet. Mina sees through Tandy’s questioning and asks her why she wants to know about her father. Mina figures out Tandy is actually Tandy Bowen, not Liz.

Connors calls Duane and tells him they need to meet later. Connors tells O’Reilly he found someone who might know the main dealer. He says they have to go after the guy. They drive to the location and Connors tells O’Reilly to come in after five minutes so he can talk to his informant.

Meanwhile, Tyrone and Duane talk about life in New Orleans. Duane says dealing isn’t that bad and he does what he has to in order to survive. He and Tyrone talk about Billy. Duane admits he saw what happened that night. Tyrone tries to get him to tell everyone that Connors is a murderer. Duane keeps repeating he did what he had to, but Tyrone says he should do better. Connors knocks on the door and Duane tells Tyrone to leave and that they will talk later on.

Mina goes to visit her father, Ivan. Tandy arrives and apologizes for lying. Mina says she would have helped her if she came and asked outright. She lets Tandy try to talk to Ivan, but he remains unresponsive. She touches his hand, but his hopes are shut behind a door she cannot enter.

Connors hands Duane a gun and tells him to shoot O’Reilly when she arrives. Tyrone hides behind something and tries to call O’Reilly. In the car, O’Reilly looks at the phone but decides not to answer. Duane says he cannot shoot anyone. Connors insists, so Duane points the gun at the door. When O’Reilly walks through the door, Connors shoots Duane. Tyrone yells and Connors realizes there’s a witness and gives chase. Connors shoots at Tyrone as he runs down the street. Tyrone manages to transport to Tandy at the church.

Tandy sees Tyrone and asks what’s wrong, but he’s too distraught to respond. She tries to comfort him, but their powers won’t let them touch. She stands unable to help her friend as he sobs.

Cloak & Dagger continues to offer a nice balance of the superhero and drama genres. I really liked the interactions between Tandy and Mina. Tyrone’s storyline continues to get darker as he tries to take down Connors. The scene where Tandy is unable to comfort Tyrone was beautifully acted by both Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph.

Cloak & Dagger airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on Freeform.
