I'd buy that for a dollar.
Even with the failed reboot in 2014 that starred Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman and Michael Keaton, it looks like we haven’t seen the last of Robocop.
MGM has just announced that Neill Blomkamp — creator of District 9 (which is great), Elysium (which, I think, is very good, even though not everyone agrees) and Chappie (which is a hard pass) — has been tapped to direct Robocop Returns.
“The original definitely had a massive effect on me as a kid,” Blomkamp told Deadline. “I loved it then and it remains a classic at the end of 20th Century sci-fi catalog, with real meaning under the surface. Hopefully, that is something we can get closer in making a sequel.”
As the title hints, this will be more of a direct sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 sci-fi cult classic.
Original writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner are returning to produce and executive produce Robocop Returns, with Justin Rhodes working on revamping a script that Neumeier and Miner started years ago.
According to Deadline, the initial plot for the film reads as follows: “Anarchy reigns and the fate of Detroit hangs in the balance as Robocop makes his triumphant return to fight crime and corruption.”
So, it basically sounds like every single other Robocop movie so far.
There’s no word on who will be cast in Robocop Returns, but judging how we’re seeing a lot of old stars return to their 80’s franchises — Sylvester Stallone to Creed, Jamie Lee Curtis to Halloween, Linda Hamilton to Terminator — I wouldn’t be shocked if Peter Weller made a return. He’s still working today and this is the role that really put him on the map.
That being said, I don’t know if we really need a Robocop Returns. It kind of feels like they blew their chance with the 2014 Robocop and this will just feel like another retread.
If it had to be done, though, I guess Blomkamp isn’t the worst choice to go with. I didn’t like Chappie at all, but his other films are great and I felt bad for him when Ridley Scott took Blomkamp’s Alien movie away.
