‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ easily repeats as box office champion

Jurassic World 3

The dinosaurs still remain kings of the box office. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom had no problem remaining at the top spot of the weekend box office.

Fallen Kingdom took a 59 percent drop during its second weekend and brought in $60 million to push its domestic total past $260 million. The drop was expected and it’s safe to say this film will not surpass the domestic gross of the original film.

The film brought in $56.1 million internationally and the worldwide gross of the film has crossed $930 million. It is likely that the film will cross $1 billion at the worldwide box office within the next week.

Incredibles 2 remained in second place with $45.5 million and the film’s domestic gross is approaching $440 million after three weeks of release. It has become the second highest grossing Pixar film of all-time and the third largest animated title ever. The worldwide gross of the film stands close to $650 million.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado opened in third place with $19 million. This was an improvement of the $12.1 opening weekend the original film had back in 2015. I expect this film to finish somewhere between $40-$50 million domestically and it already has scored positive reviews among critics.

The comedy Uncle Drew opened in fourth place with $15.5 million. It’s amazing to me that this film came from a series of Pepsi commercials. I expect this film to finish around $30 million domestically, also a big surprise for me.

Ocean’s 8 drops two spots and rounds out the top five with $8 million and a domestic gross right around $115 million. The film brought in another $13.8 internationally for a worldwide total sitting close to $210 million.

Tag crossed $40 million domestically while Deadpool 2 reached $310 million domestically and Solo: A Star Wars Story is approaching $210 million domestically. Avengers: Infinity War finished outside the top ten at twelfth place but still brought in $1.4 million and crossed $670 million domestically.

I don’t think Fallen Kingdom is going to remain box office champion for a third straight weekend as it faces competition from two releases including Ant-Man and the Wasp, the latest film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Weekend Gross by Distributor:

Universal: $60.2 million (-90.2 percent)

Disney: $49.3 million (-38.3 percent)

Sony Pictures: $20.4 million (+17 percent)

Lionsgate: $15.7 million (n/a)

Warner Bros.: $13.7 million (-6.2 percent)

20th Century Fox: $6 million (+0.7 percent)

A24: $2.4 million (-1.6 percent)

Focus Features: $2.3 million (+0.4 percent)

Next week’s openings: The First Purge (July 4th), Ant-Man and the Wasp
