Trailers by Brandon: 'Glass' wins Comic-Con, 'Fallout' is a must-see

With Comic-Con now finished, we can look back at all the great, wonderful trailers that it brought us. I have my favorite trailer, you probably have your favorite trailer, but really, we’re all winners here because we’re going to get to see all these movies.

Let’s not forget that Mission: Impossible — Fallout is opening this weekend either because, holy crap. Saw the movie last night, it completely blew me away and I’m dying to talk about it more. All this and more on this week’s Trailers by Brandon.

Opening this week:

Mission: Impossible — Fallout

Mission: Impossible is one of those rare franchises that somehow seems to either stay on par or get better with every new outing. While Ghost Protocol has traditionally been my favorite of the films, they’ve come a long way since Mission: Impossible II. Then, along comes Fallout, making everything else look like child’s play. This movie is exciting, incredibly well-filmed, smart enough to take itself seriously while also being fun at the same time and, I think, the best in the franchise to date.

Teen Titans Go! To the Movies

Look, I had no interest in this movie whatsoever after seeing the trailers. To be honest, I forgot this thing was even coming out. Now I’m looking at Rotten Tomatoes and it has an 89%. I still don’t think I can bring myself to go see it, but don’t judge a book by its cover I guess?

Hot Summer Nights

One of what feels like the hundred A24 movies that Timothée Chalamet is starring in, we don’t know much about Hot Summer Nights but the talent involved has me interested enough to see it as is.

New trailers:

Glass (Jan. 18, 2019)

Glass is easily the most impressive trailer to come out of Comic-Con, I think. The idea that we’re actually getting to see an Unbreakable and Split sequel in one, single movie still kind of blows my mind. I have no idea how this will all go down, and I don't want to see any more trailers until then, but I can’t wait to find out.

Godzilla: King of Monsters (May 31, 2019)

I know it’s not the most popular opinion, but I REALLY like the first Godzilla movie. While Kong: Skull Island had some cool ideas and yet didn’t totally do it for me, Godzilla: King of Monsters honestly looks great on nearly every level.

Aquaman (Dec. 21, 2018)

The reservations I have towards Aquaman haven’t gone away in the past week, but I still like the trailer. Even more so, I like the talent involved both in front of and behind the camera. Please don’t let me down this time DC. Please.

Shazam! (April 5, 2019)

Pretty much echoing all the sentiments from Aquaman, Shazam! has all the opportunity in the world to be something great. It all has all the opportunity in the world to crash and burn. I like what I’ve seen so far, I’m just really hoping that DC can pull through on this one.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (Nov. 16, 2018)

Putting all the Johnny Depp drama aside here (because, believe me, I have thoughts on that), The Crimes of Grindelwald is a fine trailer. I wasn’t crazy about the first Fantastic Beasts, nor was I dying to see four more of these movies, but I’ll still continue to give them a chance as long as they don’t totally go the way of the Star Wars prequels — which they haven’t yet reached.

Mid90s (Oct. 19, 2018)

Of course, Jonah Hill can direct. Why didn’t we think of this way before and give him a camera ten years ago? Mid90s looks like another hit for A24, albeit one that looks very much in the same vein as their other movies. That’s not a bad thing.

Operation Finale (Aug. 28, 2018)

A common theme of this week seems to be that I totally forgot this movie was coming out. Guess what — I totally forgot Operation Finale was coming out. The cast is cool and all, and there might be something behind this premise, but I’ve also seen a lot of similar-looking movies come and go without making much noise, so who knows how Operation Finale will fair.

Alita: Battle Angel (Dec. 21, 2018)

I think I know how Alita: Battle Angel will fair — not all too well. I don’t think audiences are ready to see ‘Uncanny Valley: the movie’ any time soon, especially not when these trailers haven't been all that good and it's coming out as early as December, which is a terrible release date for this movie.

I Think We’re Alone Now (Sept. 14, 2018)

Once again, another movie trying to play off The Leftovers. I won’t go as hard on I think We’re Alone Now because this is a really short trailer, which means this still could be its own thing, and it’s got Peter Dinklage…but also, come on. Stop ripping off one of the best shows ever made and do your own thing.

What They Had (Oct. 12, 2018)

Michael Shannon, talented as he might be, isn’t a stranger to subpar movies every now and then. I’ve got a feeling that What They Had is likely going to be one of those.

Hunter Killer (Oct. 26, 2018)

The first of two movies that probably should have come out a good twenty years ago, I’m not totally sure what we’re trying to do here with Hunter Killer. Like, maybe it’s dumb and maybe it’s fun, but is there still a market for this kind of thing?

Final Score (2018)

Yeah, if you told me this movie starred Bruce Willis, Steven Segal or Jean Claude Van Damme and that it came out in the 1980’s, I wouldn’t bat an eye. Don’t get me wrong, a good Die Hard homage movie isn’t always a bad thing — Skyscraper was better than I thought it was going to be — but this doesn’t look like it has much new to add.

Slender Man (Aug. 10, 2018)

How is this movie still coming out? Honestly, I don’t understand? Sony is trying to bury this thing after it’s gotten all kinds of negative press due to the real, incredibly tragic events that happened regarding Slender Man, to the point where I expected them to just pull this movie altogether. In fact, there’s still time. I think Sony is going to pull this movie altogether.

Rewind:

Unbreakable (2000)

Only because the most common question I hear when talking about Glass is oh it’s a Split sequel that randomly stars Sam Jackson and Bruce Willis. No. It’s not. Before Split, there was Unbreakable — an M. Night Shyamalan superhero movie that’s completely different than any other superhero movie you’ve seen. I’m pretty sure you’re going to want to give Unbreakable a watch before Glass comes out.
