Ruby Rose, genderfluid star of Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black, has landed the lead role of the upcoming CW series Batwoman.
Batwoman is scheduled to premiere in 2019 and will focus on Kate Kane, the second incarnation of the hero, reports TVline.
Kane is an out lesbian, which is something the CW wanted to reflect in the casting of their hero. And they succeeded—Rose identifies as genderfluid, but uses feminine pronouns and has had public relationships with women, having been engaged to fashion designer Phoebe Dahl in 2015.
The script is set to be written by another out lesbian: Caroline Dries of The Vampire Diaries.
Kate Kane is a young Batwoman, only making her first appearance in 2006, but one of her core love interests, Detective Maggie Sawyer, has already appeared on Supergirl.
Batwoman is set to be introduced in the upcoming CW crossover event, which, after Legends of Tomorrow mysteriously pulled out of it, will hop between the universes of Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl.
